The Mother of Normandy
Early on the morning of 6 June 1944, the full force of Operation Overlord was unleashed against Nazi forces in Normandy, France. As troops landed at five beaches along the Normandy coast, C-47 aircraft and gliders filled with paratroopers of the 82Abn & 101Abn Divisions landed behind enemy lines inland from the beaches, most in the vicinity of La Fiere Bridge. First to be liberated was Sainte Mere Eglise (SME), less than 2Km away. This is the city immortalized by the movie, The Longest Day, in which Pvt. John Steele's parachute snagged on the parapet of the church.
There were many casualties that day, and those who perished in the battle were interred in a cemetery in SME. Simone Renaud, wife of Mayor Alexandre Renaud, took it upon herself the mission of tending to the graves, and decorating them with flowers on all holidays. She also dedicated herself to writing letters to the families of each of the fallen so that they would know that their young heroes' graves were being tended to properly.
This is the story of Simone Renaud, the Mother of Normandy, the special friendship between Sainte Mere Eglise and Locust Valley, NY. It is also the prologue to a special effort now in its early stages to fund the creation of two Statues of Remembrance to be delivered to Sainte Mere Eglise where they will stand near the entrance of the 82nd Airborne Museum in SME.
This is a fundraising project of the American Legion, but all are invited to participate and assist in the effort to raise the funds to create the two statues of these great leaders-
Gen. Dwight David Eisenhower & Gen. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr.
